International concert pianist, teacher performs

PULLMAN, Wash. – International award-winning pianist Douglas Humpherys will perform a free, public concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Bryan Hall at Washington State University. The solo recital will include Liszt’s "Sonata in B Minor,” Schubert’s "Sonata in A Minor D 784,” Ravel’s "Sonatine” and Scarlatti’s "Sonata K 184” and "Sonata K 421.”In addition, he will work with regional piano teachers and students on Saturday, Feb. 2, presenting a lecture on the art of practicing at 11 a.m. and a master class at 1:30 p.m.
Inaugural gold medalist in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Humpherys is chair of the piano department at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. He completed graduate degrees at the Juilliard School and the Eastman School. His concert career has spanned more than three decades across four continents.
He has recorded for the Gina Bachauer Piano Foundation and American Public Radio and has been featured in live performances on affiliates of National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service.
Humpherys’ students have won numerous major competition prizes, including the Honens, Cleveland, Hilton Head, Osaka and Pacific international competitions and two recent national first prizes in the MTNA/Steinway Young Artists Competition. In high demand as a teacher, Humpherys has been appointed to visiting residencies or professorships at the Middle School of the Central Conservatory in Beijing, China; Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea; and the University of Michigan.
He has taught hundreds of master classes at universities and conservatories, including the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, most of the major conservatories in China, Seoul National University, National Taiwan Normal University, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Northwestern University, Oberlin School of Music and Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary, Alberta.
