WSU hosts regional segment of national singing competition

PULLMAN, Wash. - Beautiful singing will fill the halls of Kimbrough Music Building Nov. 2-3 when the Washington State University School of Music hosts the Annual Inland Empire Regional Competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. The entire competition will be free to the public. Schedules and audition site details will be available at the registration table in the Kimbrough lobby.
More than 150 singers from across the region will participate, including 26 singers and 13 accompanists from WSU. Students also will come from Central Washington University, Whitman University, Whitworth University, Gonzaga University, Yakima Valley Community College, University of Idaho and private studios.
Students each will perform three or four vocal selections and receive comments and ratings from adjudicators based on their vocal technique, language abilities and musicality. WSU voice faculty will serve as judges, along with 18 other private and university teachers.
Friday evening’s competition will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Kimbrough Music Building with high school and musical theater divisions. The classical college-age divisions will start on Saturday at 8:20 a.m. Finalists in each division will be chosen to perform in a recital in Bryan Hall Theatre at 2 p.m. Saturday, at which time the winners of each division will be determined.
WSU Associate Professor Julie Anne Wieck, audition chair, has organized the event with the assistance of the other voice/choral faculty at WSU, including Lori Wiest, Sheila Converse, Dean Luethi and Brian Carter.
