PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University welcomed another near-record freshman class for the first day of school to start the 2012-13 academic year.
Preliminary enrollment estimates show 4,100 entering freshman at WSU Pullman, as compared to last year’s record enrollment of 4,176. Official enrollment totals will be available following the 10th day of classes.

"The first day of class is always an exciting time at any university,” said WSU President Dr. Elson S. Floyd. "There is much to celebrate here this year, from the upcoming football season to a new direction for our WSU veterinary program.”
In the weeks ahead, students will witness the unveiling of the $80 million dollar Martin Stadium, along with a renewed football team under head coach Mike Leach. The university also will open the doors to the new Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health.
Much of this year’s freshman class already has been on campus for a week, thanks to the new "Week of Welcome,” a campaign that began with a two-day move-in effort involving some 300 volunteers as well as new parking and drop-off procedures. The week included a series of concerts, events and seminars designed to give students a better understanding of college life at WSU.
The class of first-time freshmen in Pullman is not only the second largest in the university’s history, but also the most diverse, with minority students making up about 30 percent. Also of note, more than 88 percent of the freshman class comes from the state of Washington.
"We continue to see increases in first-generation students and students from rural and underserved areas,” said John Fraire, vice president of student services. "Consistently we remain a promising choice for students, with more than 88 percent of our freshman coming from the state of Washington.”
