PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will present a free, public concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Bryan Hall theater at WSU Pullman.

 

Following a spirited Sousa march, the band program will feature selections inspired by vocal music. The first will be Percy Grainger’s lush setting of "Irish Tune from County Derry,” followed by "Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst, a staple in the band repertoire with four movements that contact several traditional English folk tunes. 

 

To conclude, the band will perform the fast and fiery "Dies Irae” movement from the Verdi "Requiem.”

Graduate students Seth Dunlap and Chris Wurst will conduct on the program.

The wind ensemble will conclude its 2011-12 season with works that celebrate America. Ives’ "Variations on America,” featuring student conductor Eric McElroy, will open the program.

 

The world premiere of WSU graduate student composer Ted King-Smith’s "Manhattan” will follow.  Additional works by Donald Grantham and Henry Fillmore will round out the program.
