PULLMAN, Wash. – The 2012 Showcase poster display, offering insights into research and outreach at Washington State University, was celebrated Friday, March 30, in the CUB Senior Ballroom. Above are photos and comments from people attending the event.

This year the three-hour long poster session featured 300 research projects, and, as expected, drew a strong crowd of attendees throughout the event.

"The Showcase events have evolved into Washington State University’s annual opportunity to come together to celebrate the work that we do and to highlight our accomplishments,” said Provost Warwick Bayly.

Events Friday included:

* 9:00 a.m.-noon: Academic Showcase posters/displays by faculty and graduate students of scholarship, research and creative activity, CUB senior ballroom.

* Noon-5 p.m.: Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA), CUB junior and senior ballrooms. Students in all disciplines will share results of their mentored scholarship that make an original intellectual or creative contribution to their fields.

* 2-3 p.m.: Distinguished Faculty Address presented by B.W. "Joe" Poovaiah, Regents professor, in Todd Hall 276; reception to follow.

A revolution in future agricultural practices will be fueled in part by Poovaiah’s discovery of a "master switch” that can control such functions as plant size, self-fertilization and pathogen defense.

He holds six patents and has published more than 200 research articles in leading scientific journals. In 2012 he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

* 5:30 p.m.: Celebrating Excellence Recognition Banquet, Beasley Coliseum, to honor outstanding achievements of WSU faculty and staff, including annual award winners, newly tenured and promoted faculty and new patent awardees. Reservations are closed.
