PULLMAN, Wash. – Professor Hanu Pappu will talk about his experiences as a 2009 Fulbright scholar and 2011 Fulbright specialist as part of the free, public Washington State University Fulbright Academy lecture series at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the Honors College lounge.

"Research and Teaching at Alexandria University, Egypt: Addressing Disease Threats to Food Security and Sustainability in an Increasingly Competitive Global Agricultural Trade,” is the third presentation in the series. The purpose of the series is to promote awareness of the Fulbright program and highlight work being done by WSU Fulbright scholars as well as visiting scholars and students.

Pappu, professor and chair of the WSU Department of Plant Pathology, holds the President Sam Smith Distinguished Professorship in plant virology. He chairs the WSU Institutional Biosafety Committee and is secretary of the International Working Group on Viruses.

His research interests and expertise include molecular and biotechnological approaches for characterization and control of viral diseases of horticultural crops; development of environmentally friendly and sustainable IPM (integrated pest management) strategies for reducing the impact of destructive viral diseases; capacity building in developing countries; and technology transfer.

They research tospoviruses that affect vegetables and legumes and other viruses that affect nursery, landscape and ornamental plants.
