PULLMAN - An academic showcase highlighting student and faculty research will be among homecoming weekend activities organized by the WSU College of Education.
The public is invited to the Oct. 8-9 events, including the annual Scholarship and Excellence Celebration, on the Pullman campus.
Activities begin with Dean A.G. Rud discussing priorities and answering questions 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday in Education Addition 308, at the corner of Washington and Idaho streets. Refreshments will be provided.
The academic showcase will be 1-4 p.m. Friday on the Education Addition’s first floor. It will include short presentations on such projects as: reforming high school math teaching by developing professional learning communities; using moral reasoning to combat cheating in athletics; video games that preserve a traditional Alaskan language, and the experiences of students of Middle Eastern heritage on a U.S. campus.
The Scholarship and Excellence brunch will be 9 a.m.-Saturday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The brunch costs $15 per person, free for children 12 and under.
At the celebration, the Center for Educational Effectiveness will be honored with the Advocate for Education Award. The center analyzes student achievement data and researches organizational effectiveness from the viewpoints of school staff, students and parents. It partners with 11 universities, 880 schools and 165 school districts in Washington and Idaho.
The College of Education also will honor George Landle, winner of the Miller-Manchester Award for Mentor Teacher of the Year, and Jeana Simpson, the Dr. Vitt and Mary Ferrucci Distinguished Educator in Math, Science and Technology Education.
Reservations are requested for the free conversation with the dean and for the brunch. They can be made online at http://education.wsu.edu/homecoming/2010/, or by contacting Amy L. Cox at amycox@wsu.edu, 335-7843.
