Teens devour 600-foot banana split at WSU
Monday, June 25, 2012
"We wanted to reward these teens for working to be the leaders of tomorrow,” said organizer Jon Gabelein, a 4H volunteer who teaches at Whidbey Island’s Coupeville elementary. "On a hot summer day, what’s cooler than ice cream!”
The group had originally thought they would only need about 400-feet of banana split, but thanks to some extra plastic gutter on loan from a local hardware store, and ice cream from Ferdinands, crews decided to build out the ice cream treat to run the entire length of Terrell Mall down the middle of campus.
The ice cream break a welcome treat after kid’s were already filled with a full plate of educational activities, including more than 60 workshops, hands-on activities, college/career information and recreation. Organizers wanted to offer a treat they wouldn’t soon forget.
The three-day program began Sunday. Students experience college life by sampling courses, living in dorms and learning from WSU instructors, industry leaders and career advisors. Workshops include forensic science, film and animation, robotics, advocacy training, agronomy, resume writing, paying for college, fitness and whole brain thinking styles. The conference, which began in 1927, is open to all youth entering grades 8 through 12.
By the way, the town of Selinsgrove, PA claims the world record for the longest banana split ever – with a treat that measured over 4 and a half miles back in 1988.
