PULLMAN, Wash. - Howard D. Grimes, vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School at Washington State University, has decided to return to the faculty. He was dean since 2002 and vice president since 2008.

He will pursue innovative solutions to the challenges of feeding the planet in a sustainable manner.

"Howard’s leadership has proven invaluable to Washington State University,” said President Elson S. Floyd. "Our graduate programs and research efforts have benefited greatly during his service.”

During Grimes’ tenure, WSU has seen the largest outside research and grant funding growth in its history - a 53 percent increase since FY 2008 and expenditures since then just shy of $400 million.

"We’ve enjoyed tremendous success during my time in this position,” said Grimes.

"The time is right for me to return back to my passion, and that is the pursuit of cutting edge solutions to the food production problems that burden us all,” he said.

Nancy Magnuson, the Herbert Eastlick Distinguished Professor of Molecular Biosciences at WSU, has been appointed interim vice president and dean as of May 1. A search will be launched for a permanent replacement.
