PULLMAN, Wash. – A supplemental budget proposed by Washington’s Senate would spare Washington State University from additional cuts. If approved, it would be the first time WSU has not received a cut in its appropriation since 2007.
"Senate lawmakers have shown a profound commitment to higher education with this budget,” said WSU President Elson S. Floyd. "By preserving higher education, they are to be commended for investing in our students, supporting our state's employers and committing to research that bolsters our overall economy.”
The budget does not include cuts to work study programs or the State Need Grant program. By comparison, the House budget would cut $9.3 million from WSU’s operating appropriation, while making statewide cuts to the State Need Grant program of $10 million. Since 2007, WSU has seen its state appropriation reduced by 52 percent.
"There is still much work to do in bringing the House and the Senate budgets together,” said Floyd. "We are hopeful we can carry this renewed commitment to higher education all the way to the governor’s desk for her final signature.”
