Education Abroad Director receives regional recognition

Friday, Oct. 30, 2009

PULLMAN – NAFSA: Association of International Educators, a professional organization promoting and supporting international education, has selected Candace Chenoweth, director of Education Abroad in International Programs at WSU, to receive the 2009 Region 1 NAFSAn of the Year award.

The award was presented in late October at the NAFSA Region 1 annual conference in Vancouver, Wash.
David Pietz, director of Global Studies at WSU, said Chenoweth’s dedication to international education and innovative approaches to extending study abroad opportunities to students at WSU were major reasons for her nomination for this year’s award.

“Her passion for education abroad is evident not only through her mentorship, but also in her advocacy for education abroad at regional, national and global levels,” said Pietz. “At WSU, Candace's creative leadership skills have resulted in strategic partnerships with campus entities such as the Office of Equity and Diversity and the Academic Advising Association - all with the aim of improving outreach efforts towards historically underrepresented groups.”

Chenoweth came to WSU in 2001 as an international credentials specialist and was named to her current post the following year. She also served formerly as coordinator of International Student Services at Lewis-Clark State College and as director of Academic Affairs for the Pacific International Institute. She holds a master’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a bachelor’s degree from The Colorado College.
