Gregory Susinger
Gregory Susinger has faced multiple challenges in his quest for a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at Washington State University Spokane. However, an unexpected situation over winter break nearly kept him from celebrating commencement.
Greg suffered a cerebral aneurysm while snowboarding at an area ski resort. The injury disrupted his vision and memory and Greg does not recall any of the incidents that occurred on the mountain, in the hospital or several weeks after.
“I attempted to go to school the first week of this spring semester, but due to the medications I was taking for the severe headaches I was still suffering, I was not able to make it through one class,” said Susinger.
That weekend he stopped all his pain medication, began walking to regain his stamina, and came back to school the second week. Though very fatigued and having to nap between classes in order to make through, Greg endured. The aneurysm and occlusion had distorted his ability to focus and his vision came in double, but he persisted to attend class and everyday things slowly started to get better.
His days would begin with occupational, physical, and speech therapy and then he would attend class. Roughly one month after the incident his vision returned, and he no longer required therapy. He was able to make it through his course work and has now returned to work and continues to exercise.
“With the support of my family and friends I was able to make it through this hardship and still fulfill all the requirements for graduation,” said Susinger. “I am truly grateful for all the support I received during this incident, and credit my successful return to school and completion of my degree to my friends, family, and the support I received at Washington State University Spokane.”
“I had the pleasure of working with Greg and his parents to facilitate the completion of his degree,” said Kay Meier, director and professor of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. “Mr. Susinger is well respected by the faculty for his many intellectual and personal attributes. The extent to which he was able to recover and persevere after his injury is astounding to me, and certainly worthy of recognition.”
