Yvette G. Strampe

Yvette Strampe transferred to Washington State University in her sophomore year. She was also a walk-on player who made the roster for the women’s soccer team. In the year that she played for the team, Yvette made the Pac 10 All-Academic team. She is still active with the soccer team, serving as the Volunteer Coordinator, but decided to stop playing so that she could devote more time to research, volunteer work and studies as biochemistry major with the molecular biology option.
A list of Strampe’s volunteer and community service activities include: working for three years at the LMK nursing service to provide support for developmentally disabled adults, volunteering at the Pullman Regional Hospital in the emergency department and the birth place, and serving as a learning specialist at WSU’s Student Support Services as a tutor for general and organic chemistry.
On top of her volunteer work, she has also conducted research in the lab of Ming Xian in the Chemistry department since January 2008, and received a College of Sciences Undergraduate summer research mini-grant to support her work. With Dr. Xian, Strampe has investigated the organic synthesis of the Streptomyces antibiotic Griseovirdin, focusing on the complexities of sulfur chemistry to form a thio-lactone center in a large macrolide structure. Her work has also explored novel applications of S-nitrosothiols in synthetic organic chemistry.
All the while, with her volunteer and research activities outside the classroom, she has maintained a GPA of 3.8. To acknowledge her accomplishments, Yvette has received the Yount/McFadden Scholarship in Biochemistry from the School of Molecular Biosciences, and from the College of Sciences, the William and Mary Lynn Graber Endowment Fund Scholarship for entrepreneurship and innovative leadership and the Endowed Scholarship for pre-medical students.
Strampe plans to apply medical school for admission fall 2011.
